The new manager of Tip Top Trading is holding an away day for everyone at the company. She’s got to deliver some bad news about saving money.

Listen to the story. You’ll hear these phrases. They are useful for starting a conversation about the background to a situation.

Let’s look at the backstory…
The reason we’re in this situation in the first place is…

Vocabulary

got her work cut out – has a lot to do
to handle – to deal with
consequences – results of an action
sacked – removed from your job
sales target – how much you are expected to sell
brainstorm – thinking of lots of ideas quickly but not in much detail
accounted for – added the financial details for

Grammar

1. Let me just fill you in with the background… [then explain how you have got to the current situation]
Example:
Let me just fill you in with the background… last year head office told us we’d have to improve sales by 10 per cent or face some serious consequences.

2. The reason we’re in this situation in the first place is… [then explain the background to the story]
Example:
The reason we’re in this situation in the first place is… we had a problem on our production line and we didn’t have enough plastic fruit to sell.

3. Let’s just remind ourselves how we got here in the first place… [then explain the reasons that have lead to the current situation]
Example:
Let’s just remind ourselves how we got here in the first place… it was an accounting error by… Tom!
